Proposal: Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) enhancements for Joint long range all-weather sensing requirements.
Recommendation: ANG MQ-9s require an upgrade to the Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) for long-range find, fix, and track in the maritime domain. The proposed upgrades to the MQ-9s SAR are crucial for enhancing its maritime operational capabilities. By improving the Maritime Wide Area Search mode, the MQ-9 will be able to detect surface targets at a range 45% greater than its current capabilities. The integration of inverse SAR will allow for all-weather detection and classification of surface vessels, making the platform more versatile and effective in diverse conditions. Additionally, implementing SAR-over-Internet Protocol will optimize bandwidth usage, freeing up capacity for other payloads and enhancing overall mission effectiveness. These upgrades will not only fulfill Joint maritime sensing requirements but also increase the operational reach and lethality against combatant vessels, providing critical support for long-range kill chains. This strategic enhancement will significantly improve the MQ-9s role in maritime surveillance and combat operations. ANG MQ-9s require 24 -010 radar electronic assemblies (REAs) with five additional -010 REAs as spares.
